linear city in Madrid:
Arturo Soria y Mata (1844-1920), architect and town planner, wanted to solve the nineteenth century urban problems through the growth of the city along an axis between two towns. The main road of 50 meter width planned as a fishbone diagram, had in both sides strips of 200 meter width, where the plots with the houses and gardens were located. Afterwards, parallel strips of 100 meters of forest were projected and then the agricultural land. The services were located in the main shaft. This system brought together the advantages of a fast communication through the main road provided with public transport (tram), with the hygienists’ ideals and the concept of opening up the city to the countryside. At last, they achieved to carry out 5 kilometres (currently Arturo Soria street and Garcia Noblejas brothers). |
